Interior Design School
Decorating physical spaces
Interior design is all about visualization in a given space and the ability to create something new and exciting - skilled interior designers can be employed to help in the renovation of an existing space or help in the design of an entirely new space. They can specialize in large spaces, such as offices or residences, or in small spaces like kitchens or bedrooms.
Of all the design fields, interior design is the most tightly regulated by the government. This is justified, as some interior design choices can be critical to safety and security. There are 22 states, plus the District of Columbia, that regulate interior designers. In states that don't regulate interior design as closely, it's still a good idea for all designers to seek membership in a professional organization. This gives you credibility in the industry and helps you earn the trust of potential clients.
Getting Educated
In order to become licensed as an interior designer, you must have at least two years postsecondary education in a relevant program at a recognized design school. You must have a total of six years of education and experience to pass the qualification exam for the National Council for Interior Design.
It's also a good idea to take courses that relate to interior design - architecture is the most notable example, but the more you know about art history, construction and any other related fields, the better you'll be at interior design.
You will also need training in design-related software, and will need to adapt yourself quickly to changes in technology. Computer modeling technology is used more and more in the design industry these days, and this trend will continue in the future.
Job Prospects
There are currently more than 60,000 people employed as interior designer in the United States. This number is expected to grow at roughly the national average rate for all occupations over the next decade.
Interior design is considered a luxury by many people, so the industry is especially vulnerable to economic recession.
The average annual earnings for interior designers is around $40,000.
